Ospreys win all but one singles match

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team came out with much-needed intensity and accomplished its mission on Friday in a 6-1 win over Arkansas-Little Rock at the Wichita State Shocker Invitational.

UNF (7-7) won all but one match in both singles and doubles. The Ospreys have now won five of their last seven matches. It was the fourth time this season UNF had won 6-1.

“This was a good win for us,” said assistant tennis coach Rodrigo Puebla. “It will help us bring our confidence back. It is always hard to play on the road, so I'm pleased with how we came out with intensity. I'm hoping we can play this well tomorrow with Wichita State, who will be tough. Everybody will have to come out and play their best for us to have a chance tomorrow.”

Junior Ina Durcakova snapped a three-match skid with her convincing 6-1, 6-2 defeat of UALR's Patricia Cortes in the No. 4 singles match. At the No. 2 match, senior Vanessa Sanchez put together an impressive comeback, rallying to win the last two sets after falling in the first set 4-6. She went on to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 over the Trojans' Anne Weijenborg.

At No. 1, junior Natalia Sanchez was able to down UALR's Laetitia Bourgeon 6-4, 6-1 for her eighth win in 10 matches. Junior Maria Melihova won the No. 3 competition with a gutsy 7-6, 7-6 win over UALR's Martz Gormez Jordana. Freshman Victoria Krook rounded out the singles wins with her 7-5, 7-5 victory over the Trojans' Rebecca Van Den Houte at No. 5.

UNF picked up the doubles point after Vanessa Sanchez and Durcakova teamed up at No. 2 to claim a dominating 8-1 win and Krook and Melihova picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3.

The Ospreys will return to action at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday against No. 69 Wichita State at the Shocker Invitational.
