UNF begins swing through Peach State with game at Mercer on Thursday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team is showing signs of progress these days - albeit with painful results. The Ospreys come into this week having lost 11 straight games, but four of their last seven losses have been by six points or less. Included in that stretch are their first two conference games against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson last week - a pair of losses by a combined five points.
Saturday's 71-69 defeat to Stetson came in overtime after the Ospreys led by four points with 10 seconds to play in regulation.
UNF will try to post its first wins of the conference season on the road in Georgia this week when it travels to Macon to face Mercer on Thursday night and then just north of Atlanta to play Kennesaw State on Saturday.
Senior center James Grimball has certainly made his presence felt in the Ospreys' first two A-Sun games, averaging a double-double (11.5 points, 11.5 rebounds). Junior Tom Hammonds has been the lone consistent force for the Ospreys on the offensive end, averaging 13.6 points per game for UNF this season. He averaged 17.5 points per game in UNF's two A-Sun games last week.
