JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The University of North Florida women's soccer team was unable to pull out a win in its first home game of the season on Friday night against Western Michigan falling 1-0.
The Lady Ospreys (1-3-1) were only able to muster five shots in the game, while holding Western Michigan to seven. Goalkeeper Rachael Howard had a busy night making four saves.
There was very little action in the first half, with both teams keeping a tight grip on the other. UNF started the second half strong making several runs into the box, but were unable to put any shots on goal. The majority of the possession belonged to the Lady Ospreys up until the 64th minute, when Western Michigan stepped up its game, forcing UNF to make big saves.
"It was a very close game," Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. "We did not play horrible, but it is always disappointing not getting the win." The game appeared to be headed for overtime until Ali Jacobs put Western Michigan up 1-0 in the 81st minute. The play began when Thalia Playford crossed the ball into the box where Jacobs was able to slot the ball past Howard. The Lady Ospreys have struggled to hold teams scoreless in the second half throughout the season.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2:30 for their final game of the 2007 UNF Classic.
