UNF falls 102-51 in second meeting between the teams
Box Score
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team has swept the Florida Gators in each of the last two seasons. Apparently the Gator men's basketball team felt the need to extract some revenge on Tuesday night.
The two-time defending national champions shot 54 percent -- including 52 percent from 3-point range (13-of-25) -- and outrebounded UNF (1-3) by 17 in thoroughly manhandling the Ospreys 102-51 before a crowd of 10,944 at the O'Connell Center.
Marreese Speights tallied a double- double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the 24th- ranked Gators (5-0), who shot 62 in the first half and converted 18 offensive rebounds into 26 points. UNF shot just 31 percent for the game and hit only 2-of-12 from 3-point range. Freshman DeVon Jones led the way for UNF (1-3) with 12 points, while senior Chris Timberlake added 11 points.
"We were outplayed in every way by a very talented Florida team," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "They came out with a tremendous intensity, and we failed to match it. We just got manhandled. We have to put this behind us and move on. There isn't much we can take from this, so we won't dwell on it."
The Ospreys scored the game's first basket to briefly silence the crowd at the O'Connell center, but they wouldn't stay silent for long. A 24-5 run over the next five minutes put the Gators firmly in control, and the Ospreys' icy shooting kept them from providing an answer.
UNF got as close as 24-12 a short time later, but the Gators exploded again from there, outscoring UNF 35-10 before intermission to take a 59-22 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Gators assembled an 13-2 run out of the gates and never looked back.
UNF returns to action on Friday at home when it entertains Charleston Southern in a non- conference game at UNF Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
