UNF to face off against Lipscomb, Belmont this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team returns home this weekend for Atlantic Sun Conference matches against Lipscomb and Belmont.
The action begins at 7 p.m. on Friday against Lipscomb at UNF Arena. The Bisons are coming off a big 3-2 win (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 29-31, 15-13) over A-Sun first-place team Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. Four Lady Bisons finished with double-figures in kills while two finished with double-doubles. Lipscomb was led by Sarah Snider's 26 kills. The win extended the team's A-Sun win streak to three matches. Snider is the team leader in kills with 4.85 per game, while setter Stephine Pease is averaging 12.07 assists per game.
UNF will wrap up the weekend with a 2 p.m. tilt on Saturday against defending A-Sun Tournament champion Belmont. The Bruins are tied for second in the conference at 4-1 in and went 1-1 last weekend with a win over Stetson and a loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Cat Mundy leads the team with 4.86 kills per game while preseason All-Atlantic Sun pick Colleen Nilson leads the team in assists with 12.10 per game.
The Lady Ospreys showed signs of getting over the hump last weekend and played more technically sound volleyball according to head coach Kevin Campbell, but UNF wasn't able to get past Gardner-Webb or Campbell on the road.
UNF took GWU down to the wire in a 3-2 loss (16-30, 30-28, 30-26, 19-30, 7-15) on Friday night. The Lady Ospreys took a 2-1 lead in the match before giving way to the home court advantage of the Bulldogs. Senior Maegan Weisert notched 21 digs in the match to become just the second player in UNF history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.
Against Campbell, the Lady Ospreys went up 1-0, holding the Camels to an .081 hitting percentage in the first game. But Campbell soon found its groove and took the next three to beat UNF 3-1 (30-20, 24-30, 28-30, 21-30). Senior Claire Yonutas led the Lady Ospreys with career-highs of 23 kills and 55 attempts. She hit .309 (23-6-55) on the night.
