Senior Claire Yonutas notches third straight double-double
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team took Gardner-Webb down to the wire but lost a hard-fought 3-2 match (16-30, 30-28, 30-26, 19-30, 7-15) on Friday night.
UNF (4-15, 1-4 Atlantic Sun Conference) went up 2-1 in the match after dropping game one to the Bulldogs, but they weren't able to keep the momentum going and dropped the final two games. Senior Claire Yonutas recorded her third straight double-double with 14 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Junior Bary Rasmussen showed off her supreme marksmanship with 17 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Senior Maegan Weisert's 21 digs put her over 1,000 for her career and made her just the second player in UNF history to join the 1,000 kill, 1,000 dig club.
The Lady Ospreys were able to bounce back in the second game after a rough game one in which they hit just .000 and committed 11 errors. UNF took control and broke a 19-19 tie by going on a 5-1 run to take a 24-20 lead on a kill from Rasmussen. GWU inched its way back in the game, pulling to within 29-28, but a service error by Carrie Long allowed UNF to claim the game.
Game three was a defining moment in the match for UNF. The Lady Ospreys were able to battle all the way back after trailing by as many as five. After the team trailed 24-19, UNF came back to go on an 11-2 run and win the game. UNF closed the game with five straight points that were aided by four GWU errors. Rasmussen added the exclamation point by scoring the final point with a kill.
But the tremendous comeback in game three took everything out of UNF, and GWU was able to manipulate the fourth game's direction. The Bulldogs went up by as many as 13 before settling on the final score. Game five didn't have anything better in store for the Lady Ospreys with Gardner-Webb opening the game on a 5-1 run to effectively put away UNF.
Junior Nikki Prock notched a career-high 32 digs while freshman Madeline Belvin finished with 52 assists and a season-high 28 digs. Freshman Kaley Read recorded 13 kills and seven digs.
The Lady Ospreys will try to continue their gritty play tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
