Final Stats
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team took a 1-0 lead on Saturday against Campbell but lost the momentum and dropped the match 3-1 (30-20, 24-30, 28-30, 21-30) in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Senior Claire Yonutas continued her exceptional play with a career-high 23 kills and .309 (23-6-55) hitting percentage. Yonutas' 55 attempts were also a career-high. Senior Maegan Weisert continued to solidify her legacy at UNF and recorded her 36th career double-double with 10 kills and 22 digs. Junior Nikki Prock tied the match-high with 26 digs.
UNF (4-16, 1-5 A-Sun) came out swinging in the first game and knocked around the Camels. The Lady Ospreys began to put the game away when they started on a 5-0 run after leading 18-15. The run was highlighted by two Yonutas kills, and it gave UNF a 23-15 lead. The Lady Ospreys continued to smother the Camels and outscored them 7-4 the rest of the way. Yonutas recorded six kills in the game, and UNF held Campbell to a .081 hitting percentage.
But after the impressive showing by the Lady Ospreys in game one, the Camels capitalized on their home court advantage and snatched the momentum away from UNF. The second game was deadlocked for most of the way until the Camels broke a 24-24 knot by going on a 6-0 run to wrap up the win and tie the match.
UNF stayed tough and battled back from a 10-5 deficit in the third game to tie it at 13. The teams tested each other's will and kept the match tight. After several ties, the Lady Ospreys were finally able to take a 25-23 lead. But Campbell stuck around knotted it at 25. It looked as if UNF might be able to pull out the game when it went on to take a 28-27 lead on kill from junior Bary Rasmussen, but the Camels responded with a 3-0 run to ground the Lady Ospreys.
The Lady Ospreys hit just .061 in the final game despite seven kills from Yonutas. Campbell countered by hitting .301. UNF kept the game tight and battled, but the team couldn't do anything to stop a 13-4 run by the Camels to close out the match.
UNF will try to get back on track at 7 p.m. next Friday when it returns to UNF Arena to take on Lipscomb. The match will be shown live on ASun.TV.
