VALDOSTA, Ga. -The North Florida men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon when 10th-ranked Valdosta State knocked off the Ospreys 4-3 in a battle of former Division II foes.
UNF - in its first season at the Division I level - got singles victories from Eduardo Pereira at the No. 1 position, Jose Terrera at the No. 3 position and Leonardo Gomes at the No. 6 spot, but it wasn't enough to overcome a loss in doubles against one of the nation's top Division II programs.
Terrera knocked off 20th-ranked Thomas Provost, 6- 2, 6-3, in his singles win to keep the Ospreys (4-3) in it, but the match came down to a battle between UNF's Matias Sigal and VSU's Mickael Andreo at No. 2 singles. Andreo, who is ranked 44th nationally, survived a stern test before posting a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Sigal to give the Blazers (2-0) the match victory.
The UNF tandem of Gomes and German Escallon won in doubles, upending VSU's Michael Tang and Chris Schneider 8-2, but the Blazers won the other two doubles matches to capture the point and take an early lead.
UNF will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when the SunTrust River City Rumble rivalry series begins on the tennis courts. The UNF men and women will host city rival Jacksonville at 3 p.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex.
