MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 20, 2005) -
The win prevented GC&SU (5-5, 3-3 PBC) from being swept in the three-game series after UNF (7-5, 2-4 PBC) won both games of a Saturday doubleheader. Goyen (2-0) scattered five hits with seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter in the nine-inning victory. He did not allow more than one hit in any inning.
The Bobcats jumped on UNF starter Jacob Dixon (0- 3) in the bottom of the first inning with three straight singles from Justin Mills, Hans Stancil and Mike Deveaux. After Dixon struck out the next two batters, Rivas belted his first home run of the season over the right field wall to put the Bobcats up 4-0. Rivas finished 1-for-2, while Mills was 2-for-3 to lead GC&SU at the plate.
Dixon settled down to allow only one more hit and one walk in seven innings, but the Ospreys could not generate any offense against Goyen. The outing was the longest of the year for Dixon, who is battling back from offseason elbow surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2004 season.
Brennan Grogan went 2-for-4 to lead UNF at the plate.
The Ospreys return to action next weekend when they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to play in a tournament hosted by Alabama-Huntsville at Paterson Field, site of the 2005 Division II College World Series. UNF will play No. 25 UAH on Friday at 1 p.m. ET, followed by No. 27 Columbus State at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday and No. 5 Tampa at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.
