PEMBROKE, N.C. (Feb. 5, 2005) - The University of North Florida men's basketball team shot 73 percent from the field in the first half and 69 percent overall in an 85-58 victory at UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
The win gives UNF (10-14, 5-5 PBC) its third straight victory after the Ospreys defeated Lander last Saturday and Georgia College earlier this week. Five Ospreys scored in double figures in the victory, led by Derrick Scott's 20 points.
"That was as good as our basketball team can play," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "I'm happy with the way the guys have been practicing and happy with the way they played today."
Riley Dideon followed Scott with 16 points, while Chris Timberlake had 14, Donny Lotz 10 and Carl McNally 13. David Ashwell, nursing an ankle injury he suffered in practice, was the only starter not to reach double figures. He finished the game with four points in 17 minutes of action.
Riley Dideon sunk three free throws in a row at the 16:44 mark of the first half to give UNF its first lead of the game. The Ospreys never relinquished that lead, using a 21-6 run in the opening half to take full control of the game.
Scott topped off the opening half with a jumper to give UNF a 43-24 lead. The UNF guard finished the half with 14 points. UNF hit 4-of-6 shots beyond the 3-point arc in the half and 14-of-17 in the game. Didion accounted for most of that damage by shooting 7-of-8 from long range.
UNF held a 25-point lead most of the second half and cruised to its 10th win in 10 tries against the Braves.
Ospreys' coach Matt Kilcullen said the only phase of the game he was disappointed in was UNF's 21 turnovers.
North Florida won the rebounding battle 31-23. Lotz pulled down a game high six rebounds.
Jabaar Adams and Adam Shepherdson led Pembroke with 11 points apiece.
UNF is back on the road Wednesday when it travels to Armstrong Atlantic State for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. The Ospreys return home on Saturday to take on defending national champion Kennesaw State at 4 p.m.
