MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (January 19, 2005) - Despite a furious rally to end the opening half of play, the University of North Florida women's basketball team dropped its fifth-straight game to open Peach Belt play, falling 77-61 at Georgia College & State on Wednesday.
UNF (6-10, 0-5 PBC) trimmed a 19-point first-half deficit to two and trailed by only four at the half. GC&SU (12-4, 3-2 PBC), however, opened the second half on a 15-3 run and never looked back, capturing its third win in a row against the Lady Ospreys.
"We didn't go to the free throw line at all in the second half and didn't get consistent outside shooting we did in the first half," UNF coach Mary Tappmeyer said.
The Lady Bobcats' Kristi Jones led all players with 20 points, while three Lady Ospreys scored in double figures. Brittney Davis led that pack with 14 points, followed by Jackie Beik (12) and Kayla Sheledon (10).
Sarah Wallace scored nine points for UNF, all coming in the first half. She helped the Lady Ospreys crawl back into the contest with three shots beyond the 3-point arc. Her shooting started a barrage of 3-pointers that helped UNF close out the half on 20-8 run.
"Sarah Wallace provided us with some quality minutes off the bench," Tappmeyer said.
Karli Knudsen and Alana Mountfield also contributed to the 3-point barrage.
GC&SU's start to the second half mirrored its start to the first. The Lady Bobcats kept the pressure on UNF with its full court trap, forcing 33 turnovers for the game. Those turnovers translated into easy baskets on the offensive end of the court.
UNF heated up beyond the 3-point arc in the second half when Kayla Sheldon and Jackie Beik knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers. It wasn't enough to complete the comeback, however.
Georgia College won the battle of the boards 33-29, with Ashley Williams pulling down a team high six rebounds. Brittney Davis led all players with seven rebounds.
The Lady Ospreys return home this Saturday when they host Francis Marion at 2 p.m.
