JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 27, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team slugged out a 59-38 win against Bowie State Saturday at UNF Arena to close out play in the Lady Osprey Thanksgiving Classic.
UNF (4-0) never trailed in the victory, closing out the game on a 28-10 run after the Lady Bulldogs pulled within three points of the lead.
The teams played to a defensive stalemate most of the contest, with the Lady Ospreys holding Bowie State (1-2) to 27 percent shooting from the field, but only shooting 35 percent themselves.
"It's going to take a while for this team to gel offensively," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "We don't care if we win ugly in November and December."
After watching Bowie State cut an eight-point lead to three with 12:18 to play, North Florida looked inside to score the next 12 points and all but seal the win.
Alana Mountfield accounted for six of those points, all in the paint, rebounding from a first half that saw her go scoreless from the field on 0-for-5 shooting. She finished the game with 10 points.
Brittney Davis pulled off a turnaround of her own, scoring 10 points after hitting only 1-of-14 shots on Friday against Francis Marion. Davis helped key UNF's second-half push with a layup that gave UNF a 51-34 lead.
"Brittney rebounded well from last night," Tappmeyer said. "She let that performance go and came out and did a good job."
Kim Smith followed Davis and Mountfield with eight points off the bench, while Karli Knudsen scored five points and led all players with seven rebounds.
Krystle Earl paced the Lady Bulldogs with nine points and five rebounds. Rachill Robinson followed her with eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
With the win, the Lady Ospreys - who have never trailed this season - upped their home-winning streak to 20 games.
UNF will don its road uniforms for the first time this season when it travels to Florida Tech on Tuesday, followed by a road trip to Winter Park, Fla., to take on Rollins next Saturday. Both games can be heard live on the web at www.unf.edu/sports.
