MELBOURNE, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team led Florida Tech Tuesday night for less than five minutes. That was enough, however, as UNF captured a 61-58 overtime win in Melbourne, Fla.
The victory was the fourth in a row for UNF (5-0) at the Clemente Center and third in a row against FIT (4-3).
Alana Mountfield helped get the Lady Ospreys into overtime, then put them up for good. Mountfield hit a 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds to play before completing a 3-point play to begin the overtime.
"I hadn't been hitting my shots all night, so it was good to knock that one down," Mountfield said. "Our team really stuck together in the second half and in overtime."
Mountfield's 3-pointer gave the Lady Ospreys their first tie of the game since it was 2-2, nodding the score 52-52.
Kim Smith, who finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds, had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but put a shot up too high off the glass at the buzzer. Smith helped redeem herself by winning the opening tip of the overtime, giving Mountfield a fast-break opportunity that she finished with a layup. Mountfield drew a foul in the process and hit the ensuing free throw for her 10th and final point of the night.
Jennifer Tamilio led Florida Tech with 14 points, hitting a 3-pointer down the stretch in overtime to pull the Panthers within two.
Tamara Hubbard iced the game from there for UNF, hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute of play.
UNF found itself behind early and trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening half. The Lady Ospreys countered with a 9-1 run to end the half, going into the locker room down 24-20.
FIT stretched its lead to nine points in the second half, turning to Denis Fequiere for four of her eight points in the first two minutes of play. The Lady Ospreys stiffened on the defensive end and began chipping away at the lead until Montfield tied the game.
UNF held the Panthers to 37 percent shooting for the game, creating 26 turnovers.
"On road trips we need to bring our defense," Mountfield said. "It's a different game away from our gym."
The Lady Ospreys will take on another Sunshine State Conference foe this Saturday when they travel to Rollins for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
