In his first season as an assistant coach, he developed transfer goalkeepers Luciano Natoli, who won ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 28, 2024, and Iu Pentinat, who notched a save in penalty shootouts in the ASUN Championship match. During his time at Grand Canyon, he helped the team to a West Coast Conference regular season championship in 2021. The squad went on to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament that season against Denver, who at the time had current Osprey, Ethan Ash.
Before Rangel's time as an Antelope, Rangel served as an assistant coach, goalkeeper coach and director of operations at Oregon State during the 2022 season. He was in charge of set-piece, video, camp, equipment and social media coordination, as well as travel.
In 2022, the Beavers made it to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 8 national seed. They advanced to the second round of the postseason after earning a bye as a top-16 seed.
Rangel's first stop as a collegiate coach began with Pima Community College, where he was a goalkeeper coach from 2016-21. He assisted the team to three regional titles, three district titles, three national title appearance and a national championship title in 2018.
On top of his collegiate experience, Rangel also has worked with youth club teams, as he currently is in his fourth season as a goalkeeper coach and assistant coach for Real Salt Lake Arizona. He is responsible for setting the vision for youth goalkeeper development within the academy with emphasis on technical, vision, communication and leadership.
Rangel started off as a club coach in 2016, when he became the goalkeeper coach for FC Tucson and served in that position until 2021. He was on a staff that earned a pair of conference championships and regional runner-ups, as well as three goalkeepers named in top five of PDL and 10 former keepers moving on to play professionally.
Since 2015, he has also been the owner and the president of Top Hand Goalkeeping, which has impacted over hundreds of youth goalkeepers through his program. He has extensive coaching education with certifications for USSF F, E, D & C, as well as NSCAA Diplomas 1 & 2 -- GK Specific.
Rangel started his college education at Pima Community College from 2007-09. He went on to graduate from Columbia College (Missouri) with a Bachelor's of Arts in Business Administration in 2011.
"Alex [Rangel] has come from some big programs and worked with high level coaches in his career. He's also had to work his way up from each level and will bring great experience to the UNF men's soccer staff and the Jacksonville community. He is relationship-driven and will be a big part of the culture and environment created here at UNF. I am excited to welcome him on board."
