
Alonya Waldon Hits Step-Back Three To Lift Women's Basketball Over Austin Peay, 69-66

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Junior guard Alonya Waldon drained a step-back three with 15 seconds remaining to lift North Florida Women's Basketball past Austin Peay, 69-66, on the road Saturday evening.
With the game tied at 66, Waldon would hit a contested three-pointer to give the Ospreys the lead for the final time. She matched her career-high with 24 points on 6-10 from the floor, 3-5 from three and 9-12 from the charity stripe.Â
For Waldon, it marked her third game of the season and third career game with at least 20 points, in addition to her fifth ASUN game, 10th game of the season and 21st career game with 10 or more points.
The Ospreys took an early 6-2 lead after a four-point play from junior guard Alonya Waldon. After Austin Peay tied the game at 6-6, UNF would end the first quarter on a 15-0 run to take a 21-6 lead fueled by 14 points from Waldon. North Florida would hold Austin Peay scoreless from the 6:45 mark of the first quarter to the 8:44 mark of second quarter.
The Ospreys extended their scoring run to 22-4 to take a 30-10 lead at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter. North Florida would take a 38-21 lead into the half shooting 50.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three and 83.3 percent from the free throw line with 13 points off 12 Austin Peay turnovers.
Waldon lead the Ospreys at the break with 16 points. Sophomore guard Jamisyn Stinson posted 12 points in the opening half. She would finish the contest with 18 points on 6-12 from the field, 4-7 from three and 2-2 from the charity stripe. For Stinson, it marked her fourth-consecutive contest, eighth game of the season and 21st career game in doubles figures.
Austin Peay would cut into the UNF lead with a run of their own to begin the third quarter and make the score 38-33. Redshirt sophomore Alexa Washington tacked on her first points of the night with a three ball to stop the Governor's run and make the score 41-33 at the 6:32 mark of the third quarter.
After a pair of made free-throws from junior guard Elle Blatchford, the Ospreys would push their lead back out to double figures, 49-39, at the 1:54 mark of the third quarter.
Austin Peay responded to grab their first lead of the game, 50-49, at the 0:50 mark of the third quarter. Redshirt junior forward Georgi Buzzetti quickly answered with a corner three to retake the lead.
After falling behind 62-57 in the fourth quarter, Waldon would draw the foul on a three-point shot and convert on all three free throws to make it 62-60 Austin Peay. A three from Stinson would bring North Florida within one point, 64-63, at the 2:28 mark of fourth quarter.
Stinson would sink another three to take a 66-64 lead with 53 seconds remaining. The Governors answered with a basket of their own to tie the game at 66-66 with 31 seconds remaining. Waldon responded with a step back three to give the Ospreys the lead for the final time with 15 seconds remaining in the contest.
North Florida shot 45.8 percent from the field, 47.4 percent from three and 84.2 percent from the charity stripe.
North Florida concludes its fourth game road stretch in Nashville, Tenn., against Lipscomb on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
