JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida Men's Tennis earned a dominant win over Georgia State, 5-0, in its home season opener at the UNF Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
It marked UNF's first win over Georgia State since the 2023 season.
"I'm so happy for our guys to get their first win at home this season. There were so many great moments from the match today, and one of those moments was seeing Breno [Marques] win his match on court one," Head Coach John Collins said.
"He first arrived here for the 2022 season as a freshman and didn't get a ton of opportunities to play in the line-up. Now, here he is today winning his singles match on court one. He is one of the hardest workers that I have coached, and I'm so excited for him to see his hard work and patience pay off. Our team can be great this year if we can continue to be great competitors on each court!"
Sophomore Youssef Labbene and junior Enrique Pena earned the Ospreys first doubles win of the day on court one, 6-2. Clinching the doubles point, sophomore Jean Deloziere and sophomore Joao Portugal earned a 6-2 win on court three to give North Florida a 1-0 advantage.Â
Making his Osprey debut, freshman Aron Major picked up his first collegiate win on court five, 6-3, 6-2, to begin singles action. After missing the 2025 season due to injury, graduate student Breno Marques added a singles win on court one, 6-4, 6-1.
Portugal would clinch the match for UNF with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph on court four. With the win, Portugal improved to 4-1 this season in singles play. Freshman Kyle Piqueras would extend the Ospreys' lead to 5-0 with a win on court two, 6-2, 6-3.
Although both Labbene and junior Benjamin Scott each held a lead in singles play, their matches were suspended due to inclement weather.
North Florida will take on Flagler at the UNF Tennis Complex Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.Â
