JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida and North Florida Athletics have officially opted in to the terms of the House v. NCAA settlement, the landmark resolution that introduced a substantial shift from established amateurism models.Â
Â
"The new era of NCAA Division I athletics presents incredible opportunities for student-athletes," Director of Athletics Nick Morrow said. "The University of North Florida has announced its decision to opt in to the new NCAA model, which enables us to provide greater resources to our student-athletes and compete at the highest level. This step supports our vision of setting the standard for a holistic student-athlete experience – producing champions in both athletics and academics – while elevating the University of North Florida brand."
Â
"I'm deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees, President Moez Limayem and the University's leadership for recognizing this transformative moment in college athletics and supporting the decision to opt in to the settlement. I also want to thank our Athletics leadership for their strategic planning and preparation. While there's still work ahead, this is a pivotal opportunity for our community to come together and help propel North Florida on a national level."
Â
Effective on July 1, 2025, the formal decision to opt in to the settlement presents North Florida with the opportunity to utilize its resources and remain proactive, strategic and student-athlete centered in its pursuit of success in an ever-evolving landscape entering the 2025-26 year.Â
Â
The structure presents clear direction on student-athlete compensation with the ability to directly share a portion of revenue, and additional scholarship opportunities with the removal of scholarship limits and the introduction of roster limits with oversight provided by the newly established independent College Sports Commission.Â
Â
Under the provisions of the settlement, all Power Four conference institutions were automatically included, while other NCAA Division I institutions were presented the option to participate.Â
Â
The settlement implements the removal of scholarships limits that were previously instituted and instead implemented roster limits. With the removal of scholarship limits, North Florida has the flexibility for additional scholarships to better support its student-athletes. The framework allows direct compensation to student-athletes from the institution and creates increased scrutiny surrounding third-party NIL arrangements.
Â
This presents opportunity for growth while ensuring that North Florida continues to provide a comprehensive student-athlete experience and a standard of excellence in competition, in the classroom and in the community.Â
North Florida looks forward to communicating more information related to the new NCAA model and our approach to sustaining success and accomplishing its strategic plan, The Pursuit. More information on North Florida's approach will be shared over the next few weeks.
