Pickleball Courts Added in Conjunction with UNF Student Government
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida athletics has officially announced the unveiling of upgrades made to the UNF Tennis Complex, along with pickleball courts being added in conjunction with UNF Student Government on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
University of North Florida's Student Government and Athletics Department have partnered to resurface 10 tennis courts, as well as create four pickleball courts during the renovation process at the tennis facility. The pickleball court lighting has been upgraded to match the LED broadcast-level lighting that currently exists on the tennis competition courts.
Â
"Men's and women's tennis has historically been amongst the most successful programs at UNF. We continue to invest in scholarships and facilities for all of our programs in order to impact student success and position our teams to compete for championships," said UNF Director of Athletics Nick Morrow. "The latest investment and collaboration with student government will not only impact UNF Tennis, but the entire campus community. I greatly appreciate UNF Student Government President John Grosso and his commitment to strengthening our partnership."
Â
In addition to the court upgrades, the fencing has been replaced around the lower four courts and the pickleball courts. Future upgrades will include enhancing the common areas around the pickleball courts and tennis courts to provide an area to gather before or after play.
Â
As a result of this partnership, the lower four tennis courts and the pickleball courts will be open to the campus community, including students, faculty and staff. The courts can be used for club sports, intramurals, and special events in addition to open recreational play. The available tennis courts for the campus community has now tripled and the four pickleball courts are the first true pickleball courts built on campus.
Â
"We are extremely grateful for this partnership with student government, as our facility has received some huge upgrades that will benefit both our tennis programs and the campus community. It is exciting to open up the four tennis courts and the new pickleball courts to campus, as it will bring more people down our way and be a great environment to play in," said UNF Women's Tennis Head Coach Catherine Dunagan. "I'm grateful for Nick Morrow and our administration for continuing to invest in our facilities each year. This provides an enhanced student-athlete experience, as our players take great pride in competing at such a beautiful facility, and it certainly helps our success in recruiting future Ospreys."
Â
Additional upgrades that have been completed over the past 12 months is the LED broadcast-level lighting on all 10 tennis courts, a new scoreboard, individual scoreboards on each competition court and a permanent sound system mounted to the scoreboard.
Â
PlaySight system has also been installed and utilized at each competition court at the UNF Tennis Complex. This will be used to produce live streams for each match played, along with automated production live streaming, multi-angle video, performance analysis, instant replay, tagging, data and analytics.
Â
"Extremely excited to be partnering with student government to promote the growth of racket sports across the campus here at UNF. With their support, we have made huge advances in our championship facility to be one of the best in college tennis," said UNF Men's Tennis Head Coach Matt Lucas. "To be able to add a pickleball centre as well just brings the entire facility together. We know how much pickle is growing and this allows our student body to play at an amazing venue and hopefully draw more traffic over to the tennis centre. We have a great relationship with our accomplished club tennis teams and we enjoy seeing them practice and compete as well. Thanks to Nick Morrow and the leaders across campus for this opportunity. See you at the courts! SWOOP!"
Â
The UNF Tennis programs have been exceptional over its time in the Atlantic Sun Conference combining for 13 regular season conference championships and 12 conference tournament championships. The Ospreys also celebrate 40 years of athletics since the tennis programs' inception in 1984 as a part of District 25 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA).
