Broke Seven-Year Program Record in 400m Race
ATLANTA - Just days after making his collegiate outdoor debut at the Bob Hayes Invitational, freshman sprinter Rey Hernandez notched his first career ASUN Freshman Athlete of the Week award after finishing top two in a pair of races over the weekend, as a announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
After having a successful indoor season other program records broken, as well as an All-ASUN Third Team selection as a part of the DMR team, Hernandez picks up right where he left off with fast times in the 200m and 400m at the Bob Hayes Invite. He placed first in the 400m with a program-record time of 47.55 and second in the 200m at 21.62.
"Rey [Hernandez] has been working really hard and it was great to see his 400m time so fast," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "His primary event the 400m hurdles, so that should be a sign that he is really ready to run great in the hurdles. We're looking forward to the upcoming meet and am really proud of how well he's doing so far."
The Lakeland, Fla., native becomes the first freshman of the men's side to earn the conference's FOTW honor since Jake Turner during the 2021 season. He becomes the fifth-ever athlete to win the award, with all five occurring since 2019.
He will return on the road next weekend to compete at the Gator Invitational from Mar. 29-30 hosted by Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
