First Sweep of Three Conference Awards in Program History
JACKSONVILLE - North Florida men's soccer put together a clean sweep of the Atlantic Sun's weekly awards with junior Alex Barnett taking home ASUN Player & Defensive Player of the Week honors, along with Luciano Natoli Earning ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
For the fifth consecutive week, UNF has been given ASUN Player of the Week laurels, courtesy of Barnett's game-winning header in the 67th minute in a 2-0 road win against Queens. Barnett also held it down on the defensive end playing all 90 minutes to lead a backline that has forced back-to-back shutouts in the late stretch of conference play.
"Alex [Barnett] has been putting in consistent defensive performances this year and a key part to our success," said head coach Jamie Davies. "To add another clean sheet and to score his first goal for UNF was the reward he deserves."
With Barnett's dual distinctions, it's the first time since Jay Bolt in 2016 that an Osprey has won Player & Defensive Player of the Week in the same week. Natoli joins in with three saves for his weekly award to bring UNF its first three-award sweep since ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week was introduced in 2022.
Natoli has been a crucial part of the Ospreys' late success on defense with consecutive clean sheets, including a three-save performance on the road this past Saturday in Charlotte. He becomes the second UNF player to take home the recognition, as well as the fourth honor overall for the Ospreys.
"Luciano [Natoli] has been playing with great confidence and he really helps us with how we want to play," continued Davies. "Two clean sheets in a row for him is a sign of a great team performance, as well as him stepping up in big moments."
Barnett, Natoli and the rest of the UNF squad will come back home for its regular season finale on senior night against Central Arkansas on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Hodges Stadium.
