Ash Selected as Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Board Also Makes All-Academic Team
ATLANTA - North Florida men's soccer made waves in the Atlantic Sun's postseason award circuit with Luc Granitur and Herbie Steigelman both earning Second Team All-ASUN, followed with Ethan Ash and Zach Board making the Academic All-ASUN Team. Ash garnered the laurel of ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year as announced Friday afternoon by the league office.
The Ospreys have been selected to an All-ASUN team in 10 of the past 11 seasons, as well as an ASUN All-Academic Team in nine of the past 10 seasons. The team increased its total postseason honors to 21 all-conference selections and 10 all-academic selections.
UNF joins Stetson and Bellarmine as the only teams in the conference this season with multiple All-ASUN and All-Academic selections. This is the first time since the 2019 season that they have had two selections on each team.
Granitur ended the 2023 season as UNF's leading scorer in the midfield, while Steigelman was the lone player on the squad to start and play in all 15 games on his way to matching the career record program mark of 69 games played in the regular season finale.
This is the first time in program history that a UNF player will be taking home the conference award for Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Ash started 12 of 13 games played for the UNF defense, while earning a perfect 4.0 GPA in business management as a redshirt senior.
Board also made the conference's All-Academic team, as he currently holds a 3.90 GPA in health science as a senior. He made his mark on the season after scoring a pair of goals in back-to-back games during non-conference play.
"I am very happy for the student-athletes recognized for their efforts this season, as it is well deserved. Herbie [Steigelman] has been so consistent his entire career and Luc [Granitur], as a newcomer, helped our attack this season. For Ethan [Ash] to get Scholar-Athlete of the Year speaks volumes for his drive and success on and off the field. Zach [Board] has been an excellent student-athlete his whole career as well. Again, congratulations to our guys for the honors they received, as they represent the program the right way on and off the field regardless of wins and losses."
