Men's Soccer Leans On Defense in Scoreless Draw Against FGCU

Micah Gun Notches Career-High Seven Saves

TAMPA, Fla. - North Florida men's soccer (2-6-2, 1-2-1 ASUN) fought hard for all 90 minutes against Florida Gulf Coast (4-2-3, 1-1-2 ASUN) to earn a point in conference play with a scoreless draw on Friday evening.

After the game was moved to Corbett Stadium at USF and played a day earlier than scheduled, the Ospreys' defense prevailed once again with North Florida forcing a shutout for a second-consecutive game. It's the first time UNF has forced back-to-back shutouts since beating Lipscomb and Stetson last season.

Micah Gun put on a show once again for the Ospreys, as he recorded a career-high seven saves in front of the net in Tampa. He recently came off a four-save performance against Queens earlier this week, bringing him to ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Great defense opened up the first half for both teams, as the first shot wasn't taken until 23 minutes into the match.
  • Gun saw his first action in the 24th minute with a save in the bottom right, along with another save just three minutes later.
  • He also earned his third save of the game with another stop on the right side to keep it scoreless.
  • With time dwindling down in the half, Braden Masker ripped a shot on goal, but it was saved as the buzzer went off for half.
  • Another pair of saves were made to open the second half by Gun to surpass his season-high total 60 minutes into the game.
  • In the 58th minute, FGCU was assessed a red card, but UNF's penalty kick was saved to keep it knotted at 0-0.
  • Just moments later, LJ Estes was handed a red card to even the advantage with 10 players a piece.
  • Another attack from FGCU was made in the 76th minute, but Gun came through with another pair of saves to bump his total to seven on the night.
  • Owen Cunha attempted a shot straight on goal in the 81st minute, but FGCU's keeper made his third save of the game.
  • FGCU had two shot attempts in the final minute, but both were off target for the Ospreys to secure a 0-0 draw.

  • It is the second time this year that the Ospreys and their opponent have finished a match with at least one red card.
  • First career start for Rio Onwumere after making six appearances earlier this season.
  • It was also the first start for Joaquin Acuna, who leads the team in goals scored, since Sept. 13, against Georgia Southern.

FROM THE MOUTH OF MARINATOS

"We fought as a collective tonight and came away with a crucial point on the road and three shutouts in last four games, with a four-game unbeaten streak. We defended well overall and created the moment in the game with the penalty kick, but their keeper made a big save. We were unfortunate to get a red card as well. Credit to the guys to play two rescheduled road matches inside five days due to the hurricane. Will be nice to have a week to prepare for our next opponent in Bellarmine."
