Late Surge Not Enough Against FGCU
2/28/2021 5:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT MYERS, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball had a late run in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the large lead FGCU built in the third as the Eagles took a 66-54 win Sunday at Alico Arena.
"I really like how we regrouped and responded today. We didn't get the win, but I feel like we are in a really solid spot as we go into our last regular season weekend." - head coach Darrick Gibbs
FGCU used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to build a double digit lead it never relinquished. UNF made an attempt to shrink the advantage with a 12-2 run of its own in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the Eagles.
The Ospreys and Eagles face off again Sunday at 2 p.m.
Ospreys of the Game
- Jazz Bond | 18 pts, 9 reb, 3 blk
- Rhetta Moore | 13 pts, 6 reb, 3 stl
- Emma Broermann | 6 pts, 11 reb (ties career-high)

Turning Point
FGCU used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to build a double digit lead it never relinquished. UNF made an attempt to shrink the advantage with a 12-2 run of its own in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the Eagles.
INSIDE THE GAME
- FGCU wasted no time taking an 11-2 lead by 6:37 in the first and forcing an Osprey timeout.
- The timeout proved to be a catalyst as North Florida went on a 13-3 run and held the Eagles without a basket for more than four minutes to lead 15-14 after one.
- In the second, turnovers hampered the Ospreys as FGCU used a 19-2 run to eventually lead 35-21 at the break.
- Coming out of the half, the teams traded baskets with the hosts owning a 49-30 edge after three.
- Moore sparked a 12-5 run with a triple early in the fourth quarter as the Ospreys shrank the FGCU lead to just 56-45, but three straight buckets on the Eagles' end of the floor put the game out of reach for UNF.
Osprey Fast Breaks
- For the second straight game, North Florida struggled from long range hitting just three triples for the game to FGCU's 12. Despite the low threes against the Eagles, UNF has 201 as a team to sit in second place in the single-season records at UNF and is just 11 shy of breaking the mark set by last year's team.
- The battle inside was closer as UNF owned the 28-24 advantage in the paint and a slight 37-36 edge off the glass.
- Bond's three blocks gives her 202 for her entire career and 193 in an Osprey uniform. The senior is on track to break the men's block record which stands at 204.
- For just the second time this season - the first was against FGCU Saturday - UNF recorded single-digit assists.Â
