JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - VMI (1-2) salvaged one game of the season-opening three-game set thanks to five two-out runs as UNF baseball fell 5-1 Sunday, Feb. 16.
The Ospreys (2-1) took two of three games against the Keydets, securing the season-opening series for the second consecutive year.
Young Arms
Five of the eight pitchers UNF sent to the mound last weekend were underclassmen. A pair of sophomores started in
Logan Clayton and
Ryan Jean.
Freshman
Dominick Madonna had a stellar inaugural outing in a 6-2 win against VMI. The rookie entered the game at the start of the seventh inning and retired nine consecutive batters, notching one strikeout. Madonna tallied the first save of his career in three frames of hitless ball.
Sophomore
Will Ohme had two appearances, spinning 4.0 innings while allowing only one unearned run. Ohme had three punchouts, including his first career strikeout as an Osprey.
UNF Debuts
Six players made their UNF debuts this past weekend.
Trey Spratling-Williams and
Ricky Presno made starts in each of the three games. Presno went deep for a two-run blast in UNF's 6-2 victory against VMI Saturday.
Freshman
Cade Reich came in the game Friday night and Sunday afternoon as a reserve. Reich went 2-for-2 Sunday, tallying a two-out RBI single.
A Balk-Off!
UNF's 5-4 win Friday night came on a walk-off balk. Down 4-3, UNF scored and got the winning run to third before VMI lefty Will Lopez balked in sophomore
Grant Grodi.
A Year in Review
UNF went 32-25 and 12-11 in ASUN play a year ago, finishing fifth in the conference. The Ospreys picked up three wins against Power Five opponents, including a season-opening series win against Missouri Feb. 15-17.
The Ospreys had a number of players turn out big play in 2019. Seven times UNF picked up ASUN weekly honors and two players earned ASUN superlative awards. Righty
Brad Deppermann became the first player in program history to be named ASUN Pitcher of the Year, while junior outfielder
Tanner Murphy was tabbed ASUN Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Murphy and Deppermann both landed on the first team while second baseman
Jay Prather was also tabbed to the first team. Senior righty
Nick Marchese had a breakout year, going 7-0 en route to ASUN Second Team All-Conference honors. Designated hitter
David Maberry hit a team-high .327 and picked up ASUN Second Team All-Conference recognition.
Deppermann would be drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB June Draft and Murphy was picked up by the New York Mets in the 18th round. Marchese earned a free agent deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
New Faces
The 2020 roster features 16 returning letterwinners and 14 newcomers. UNF has eight pitchers returning from a year ago, while it lost arms in
Brad Deppermann,
Trace Norkus,
Nick Marchese and
Ethan Michaelis. UNF's offense sees five returning letterwinners.
The Ospreys have a combined eight players that have transferred in from a junior college or a four-year institution. Two-way player
Austin Bogart comes to UNF after three years with the Stetson Hatters.
All told, there are 32 players on UNF's 2020 roster.
The Season in Store
There are 52 games on the docket for the 2020 season, with 35 set to be played at Harmon Stadium. UNF will play 45 of its 52 games in the state of Florida, only venturing outside the Sunshine State for a game at South Carolina and series against NJIT and Kennesaw State.
North Florida plays four Power Five foes, with two coming from the Big Ten and the SEC respectively. Overall, UNF plays 15 games against 2019 NCAA Championship participants (Central Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois State, FAMU, Florida and liberty). UNF has faced every team at least twice in program history.
The Ospreys are a combined 288-244 against this year's foes.

-Rutgers was swept by No. 3 Miami this past weekend.
-Miami scored a combined 21 runs in the final two games of the series, although Rutgers gave Miami all they could handle, falling 2-1 in the opener.
