Osprey junior standout will not sign with an agent
JACKSONVILLE -- North Florida junior forward Wajid Aminu has announced his intention to declare for the 2019 NBA Draft, but will not hire an agent, maintaining his amateurism.Â
Aminu put his name into the NBA Draft, making him eligible to be drafted on draft night on June 20, 2019. He has also submitted his name to the Underclassmen Advisory Committee. Aminu is able to start attending workouts scheduled by NBA teams and is eligible to participate in the NBA Draft Combine on May 14-19, 2019, in Chicago, if he is invited. He has until deadline of May 29 (10 days following combine)Â to weigh his options and keep his name in or withdrawal from the NBA Draft. Withdrawing his name from the Draft will maintain his eligibility in intercollegiate athletics.
"After consulting with my family and Coach Driscoll, I have decided to enter my name in the NBA Draft and begin preparation for the next step in my career," Aminu stated. "I will not hire an agent and am using this tremendous opportunity to gather the information needed to plan for my future. I truly appreciate the support from my family and coaches in pursuing my dreams and I'm looking forward to beginning this exciting process."
The 2018-19 ASUN Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-ASUN honoree, Aminu led the conference and ranks 33rd in the nation for blocked shots with 68 this season. He averaged a career best 11.7 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds per contest. Aminu was one of the league's most efficient shooters, connecting at 55.1 percent. He finished his junior campaign with seven double-doubles and reached double figure points in 23 games.Â
Aminu, who garnered ASUN Freshman of the Year and ASUN All-Freshman honors in 2016-17, finished the season with 974 career points and 620 rebounds (5th most in UNF program history). He also tallied 133 career blocked shots while averaging 6.5 rebounds a game. Off the court, Aminu has collected a pair of ASUN All-Academic honors for his strong classroom performance majoring in international business. Additionally, Aminu's older brothers Alade and Al-Farouq are both playing professional basketball with Al-Farouq a member of the NBA's Portland Trailblazers.
"Wajid Aminu has not only developed into a dominate player in the ASUN, but his pedigree in professional basketball is deep which makes his decision to enter the 2019 NBA Draft understandable," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "In addition to having strong success in our league, Wajid has played against 18 Power 5 teams during his career. He currently ranks among the Top #100 Most Efficient Players in his class adding to his thought process for 'testing the waters'. He will not sign with an agent so the structure of the NCAA rules regarding this announcement provides him with the flexibility to return to UNF for his senior year."
