Behind the Line Score
- The first five innings of baseball were controlled by the two pitchers on the mound, Brad Deppermann and lefty Matt Mikulski.
- The two teams combined for only four hits through five innings.
- Fordham's Nick Labella hit a ringing double into the left field corner with one out in the fifth. With two outs, Jake Baker laced a single into right that Wes Weeks gathered and fired back to Hurwitz at home, cutting down Labella at home.
- The Rams crossed home in the sixth though. A one-out single from Jake MacKenzie turned into three bases as the shortstop stole second and third. Catcher Justin Bardwell drove him in with a sacrifice fly one batter later.
- UNF answered with three in the bottom of the sixth. Hurwitz and Weeks singled before Berry rolled into a fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners.
- Murphy beat out a tapper to third, plating Hurwitz before David Mabbery dropped in an RBI single to left, putting UNF up, 2-1. Jay Prather took a fastball off his back to load the bases before May hooked an RBI single to left.
- Deppermann turned a perfect seventh and reliever Ethan Michaelis followed with his own scoreless inning in the eighth.
- Jason Coules singled to start the ninth and Labella lifted the big blow to left, a game-tying two-run home run.
- Miller entered and quieted the Rams for 4.0 innings. The redshirt-junior didn't allow a hit, permitting only two walks while fanning four.
- The wild night was capped off with four consecutive walks in the bottom of the ninth. Murphy, Chris Matthias and Prather all walked to set up May's game-winning free pass.
Coach's Comments
"It was a great battle. They're a good team, they won 35 games last year in a good A-10 conference. The one thing that you have to do is play the whole game, and while they hit the big two-run home run to tie it up, our guys never gave in and we had a good win." -- Head coach Tim Parenton.
Notes
- Fordham had seven players pitch, including their starting right fielder and leadoff hitter, Alvin Melendez.
- Wes Weeks is on a five-game hitting streak to start the year, hitting .522 during that span.
- Miller spun the second-longest outing of his career. His career long was set last season against Radford, a 4.1 inning effort. He had six strikeouts in that effort, also a career high.
- It was UNF's longest-game inning wise since defeating FGCU 11-10 April 30, 2016.
- This was the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
- This was UNF's first game without an extra-base hit this season.
- Fordham falls to 0-4 while UNF picks up its third win in a row.
