SECAUCUS, N.J. – North Florida junior pitcher Frank German was selected in the fourth round (127th overall) by the New York Yankees in the 2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. It marks the sixth-straight year an Osprey has been taken in the MLB draft.
Â
The selection caps a banner junior season for the Tampa, Fla. native who was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award. His 2017-18 campaign highlights featured his selection as a first-team All-ASUN honoree and also included him earning ASUN All-Tournament recognition following his final start in the Osprey's tournament opener that saw German strikeout 10 and surrender just one run in a complete game effort.Â
Â
German led the ASUN with a 1.58 ERA and posted an 8-3 mark this season in 14 starts. He recorded 108 strikeouts in 91.1 innings of work for UNF, becoming the first Osprey hurler to surpass 100 Ks in a season since Travis Stanton in 2004. For the season, German allowed one or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 14 starts, while notching six or more strikeouts in 13 contests.
Â
He becomes just the fourth player in program history to be drafted in the first five rounds and is also the highest drafted pitcher in program history. North Florida has had 47 players selected in the MLB draft.
