Sagas Buries Game-Winner at UNC Asheville
8/25/2017 10:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman Madi Sagas came in off the bench and buried the game-winner as North Florida women's soccer grabbed a 2-1 overtime win at UNC Asheville on Friday evening.
Â
GOALS
UNCA: 57' -- Courtney Naber (Zoe Lewis)
UNF: 87' -- Kendall Pollock (Unassisted)
UNF: 96' -- Madi Sagas (Andrea Sanchez)
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a half of soccer the teams were knotted in a scoreless draw. UNCA (2-1) held a slight, 6-5, edge in shots, but North Florida (2-1) owned a 3-1 advantage in on-target shots.
- The Bulldogs found the back of the net in the 57th minute when Courtney Naber drilled a shot to the right side after a dish from Zoe Lewis from the top of the box.
- North Florida continued its attack and it paid off when senior Kendall Pollock dribbled through the defenders on the right side and found the left side of the goal to knot the score at 1-1.
- Heading into overtime, neither team had many chances, but North Florida's one shot paid off.
- Madi Sagas subbed into the game and did not waste any time as Andrea Sanchez dropped the ball in behind the keeper for Sagas to sprint in and sail the ball into an empty net.
Â
CONFER'S CORNER
"First off, credit to Asheville for a hard, fought game. It was a tremendous effort from our girls tonight and I am proud of them for fighting from behind for the win. It wasn't pretty at times and we missed a few chances early, but eventually found a way to win. We had two great goals from Kendall an dMadi. It was a great way for Madi to start her college career."
Â
GAME NOTES
- The Bulldogs outshot the Ospreys 14-11.
- Keeper Rhiannon Conelley picked up four saves in the win.
- North Florida last picked up an overtime victory at USC Upstate in 2016 with a 4-3 win.
- The Ospreys are 2-2-5 under Confer in overtime games.

UP NEXT
North Florida now heads to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on another Big South opponent in Winthrop on Sunday at 1 p.m.
