DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball earned its ninth consecutive win on Tuesday night with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium. With Tuesday night's triumph, UNF set a new program Division I record for longest winning streak.
Â
Heading into Tuesday's match, the previous longest winning streak in UNF's Division I history was eight matches set Oct. 26-Nov. 16, 2012 during head coach Steve Loeswick's first season.
Â
Ambre Desaulnay and Carina Hoff led the Ospreys. Desaulnay registered an 11-kill, 12-dig double-double, while Hoff tallied 18 kills. Tessa Alyman and Katarina Raicevic each added 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Carinne Turner put up 35 assists, while Kimberly Ferguson added in 21 digs.
Â
UNF hit .340 for the match, making 67 kills with 66 assists and 62 digs
Â
Delicia Pierre, who tallied her 1,000 career kill on Tuesday, paced the Wildcats with 17 kills. Hazel Ortiz-Rosado tallied 47 assists and 13 digs, while Normarie made 17 digs.
Â
Bethune-Cookman hit .301 for the match with 59 kills, 56 assists, 61 digs and 11.0 blocks.
Â
In an explosive first set, both teams hit .400-or-better and there were 10 ties. UNF hit .439 for the set, making 20 kills, while Bethune-Cookman hit .400 with 22 kills. After Bethune-Cookman had a late 22-19 lead, the Ospreys fought back to even the set at 22-22 off an Alyman kill. As the teams traded points, consecutive Pierre kills lifted Bethune-Cookman to the first-set victory.
Â
A key five-point run midway through the second set separated UNF from the Wildcats. Trailing by one, a kill from Alyman sparked the run that put the Ospreys up 19-15. Although Bethune-Cookman made it a two-point set twice, a kill from Hoff started a set-ending four-point run that allowed UNF to even the match at 1-1.
Â
UNF battled back from a slow start to the third set and eventually used a four-point run to tie the set at 17-17. After trading points, a kill from Raicevic and consecutive Desaulnay aces put UNF ahead 24-22. Bethune-Cookman stayed alive in the set with a Phylecia Armstrong kill, but an set-ending block from Alyman and Morgan Van Alstine gave UNF the critical third-set victory and a 2-1 advantage in the mathc.
Â
Several runs towards the end of the fourth set were key in the Ospreys' victory. Trailing by one, kills from Hoff and Raicevic allowed UNF to gain a 19-18 advantage. Although an Ortiz-Rosado kill evened the set at 19-19, a Wildcat service error was the first of three-straight UNF points as the Ospreys went up 22-19. After a Pierre kill made it a two-point set, a Wildcat ball handling error and an Alyman kill allowed UNF to gain a match-point 24-20 lead. Bethune-Cookman kept the match going with a Destiny Hudson kill, but Alyman registered a kill on the next point to end the match.
