FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jonathan Deautriell claimed the Singles B Championship on Sunday as the University of North Florida men's tennis concluded play at the Bedford Cup at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"Jonathan fought off a lot of adversity in the final and played a great match today to win his draw," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "He showed a lot of heart to get the win."
Â
Deautriell, who was the top-seeded player in the Singles B bracket, began the day with a 7-5, 6-4 semifinals victory over UCF's Nico DeFraia. In the finals, Deautriell bounced back to defeat Florida's Jordan Belga. After dropping the first set 6-0, Deautriell won the final two sets with 6-1, 7-5 scores to win the title.
Â
In the Doubles A championship match, Lasse Muscheites and Zach Goldberg played a close match with the tournament's No. 2 seeded Chase Perez-Blanco and Joshua Wardell, but ultimately fell 8-7 (4).
Â
"We also performed at a high level in the doubles final. Lasse and Zach did a great job of executing the controllable parts of doubles, but their opponents played great in order to win a close tiebreaker," said Finnegan.
Â
Additionally, Julian Bradley claimed a 6-2, 6-0 consolation singles win over UCF's Jack Thiessen.
Â
"It was a very positive weekend all-around," said Finnegan. "I am really proud of all the guys for how they handled their various challenges."
Â
UNF returns to action with the 2015 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships that starts Oct. 3 at University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Jack Findel-Hawkins and Yannick Zuern will represent the Ospreys at the tournament. Zuern (Pre-Qualifying) and Findel-Hawkins (Qualifying) will both compete in singles. They then team up for the Qualifying Doubles round.
