FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Kaylie Wallace struck out nine and the North Florida softball team defeated River City rival JU 12-1 in five innings in the opening game of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at the FGCU Softball Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
Â
The Ospreys (31-26) move on to the second round matchup against the top-seeded USC Upstate Spartans tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Â
"This was the best game we've played all year. Offense, defense and pitching all came together on this one," said coach Marcie Hickey, who earned her 200th career victory at North Florida. "We never got complacent and kept our foot on the gas all game. It was a huge win and a great way to go into tomorrow."
Â
The Ospreys started off with a 1-0 lead after one inning when junior Stacy McClelland drove in a run with an RBI single, scoring senior Kelly Wilson.
Â
North Florida put up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. First junior Katie Mandigo scored off of an illegal pitch, then junior Lexi Taylor scored on a throwing error. Junior Shelby Duncan capped off the inning with a RBI single to right field, scoring freshman Taylor Aguayo.
Â
The Ospreys kept the runs coming with a six-run third inning. First freshman Casey Estes advanced home on an illegal pitch, followed by a RBI single by Taylor, which scored Arciola. Freshman Ashley Niesman doubled in Mandigo to push the lead to 7-0. Wilson then tripled home two runs to make the score 9-0, and Duncan capped the inning off with a RBI single to score Wilson.
Â
The Ospreys added two more in the fourth inning, first Taylor doubled home Mandigo, followed by Aguayo knocking in senior Abby Tewey with a RBI single, closing the fourth on a 12-0 lead.
Â
The Dolphins mustered their only run in the fifth inning with a RBI double, but the Ospreys' defense shut down the Dolphins to close the game with the run-rule final of 12-1.
Â
Wallace was on-key in the pitcher's circle for the Ospreys, striking out nine and only allowing four hits, two walks and one earned run.
Â
Notes: The Ospreys set a season-high with five extra-base hits. A total of eight Ospreys registered hits, with four Ospreys having multiple hits.
Â
Tomorrow's game against USC Upstate, as well as every game in the A-Sun Conference Tournament will be live streamed on ESPN3.
