@OspreyWTEN Cruises Past Louisiana 6-1 to Conclude Regular Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis captured its eighth consecutive victory on Friday afternoon by overpowering Louisiana 6-1 at the UNF Tennis Complex in the Ospreys' regular season finale.

UNF already had an advantage at the start of the match as Louisiana forfeited the matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Doubles was a close competition on the two remaining courts. Taylor Hollander and Esther Zuniga rallied and overtook Nelo Phiri and Elena Sava 8-6 at the No. 1 spot and UNF clinched its 14th doubles point of the season. Meanwhile, at No. 2 doubles, Luise Intert and Rebeca Pereira were tied at 7-7 with Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson when the doubles point was clinched.

In singles, UNF cruised to wins on four of the five playing courts. Marina Cunningham and Michelle Valdez finished their matches within minutes of each other. Cunningham shutout Lauren Dupuis 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 5 court, while Valdez claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sava at No. 2 singles to put UNF up 4-0.

The Ospreys lead was pushed to 5-0 after Phiri retired at No. 1 singles, allowing Zuinga to take a 6-1, 4-0, retired victory. Quetzali Vazquez captured UNF's last singles point, downing Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Louisiana avoided the shutout with Way's 6-4, 6-2 win over Hollander at No. 3 singles.

UNF returns to action with next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament that is Apr. 17-19 at the UNF Tennis Complex. As the Atlantic Sun Regular Season Champions, the Ospreys are the No. 1 seed and receive a first-round bye. UNF begins play in the tournament in Saturday's semifinals. UNF's possible opponents will be determined after the final conference matches are played on Saturday.
