Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis posted a dominating 7-0 sweep of College of Charleston on Monday at the UNF Tennis Complex in order to remain unbeaten at home this spring.
Â
"This was a good match for us. We learned that we have to play offensive tennis the whole match and take advantage of every opportunity we get to be aggressive," said head coach Audra Cohen. "Although we won the doubles point, we did not necessarily play the right way on two of the courts, so it was good to see the girls that played passively in doubles start their singles matches strong. We are learning that we have to evaluate our matches based on playing the right way."
Â
College of Charleston came out with the first doubles win as Samantha Maddox and Brooke McAmis defeated Luise Intert and Rebeca Pereira 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. However, the Ospreys responded by winning on the other two courts in order to take the doubles point. Taylor Hollander and Marina Cunningham downed Katherine Schofield and Jenny Falcone 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Esther Zuniga and Quetzali Vazquez's 6-4 win over Mara Argyriou and Sara Jane Jones on the No. 3 court clinched doubles point for the Ospreys.
Â
In singles, UNF posted five two-set victories and one three-set triumph. Vazquez quickly won her No. 5 singles match in order to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead. Vazquez overpowered Helena Nyikos 6-2, 6-0. Esther Zuniga cruised past Argyriou 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles in order to lift the Ospreys to a 3-0 advantage. Taylor Hollander captured the match-winning point on the No. 1 court with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Maddox.
Â
The Ospreys' pushed their lead to 5-0 in the team score after Intert took a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jones at No. 6 singles. Michelle Valdez played the only three-set match of the day, holding on for a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory against Falcone on the No. 4 court. Cunningham wrapped up the match by defeating Schofield 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Â
UNF returns to action on Saturday at USF. The Ospreys look to avenge a 4-1 loss suffered against the Bulls during earlier this season at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Saturday's match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
