KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The North Florida women's golf team continued their solid spring play Sunday moving to the top of the 40-team leaderboard after firing an opening round 297 at the Kiawah Island Classic held at Oak Point and Osprey Point Courses.
The Ospreys boasted three Top 20 performers in a field that features over 200 individual competitors. Junior Mary Dawson led the charge for UNF with an even-par 72 followed by fellow juniors Emelie Alpe and Kelly Aylwin tied for 16th at 74.
Sophomore Lauren Coe finished the opening round tied for 41st and junior Belinda George rounded out the Osprey lineup in a tie for 61st after a round of 79.
North Florida owns a one-stroke advantage over Troy at 298 with Chattanooga (299), College of Charleston (300) and Western Carolina (300), Stetson (304), Samford (305), Elon (306), Jacksonville (310), SCAD-Savannah (311) and Jacksonville State (311) completing the list of Top 10 squads.
Jacksonville State's Melania Baja Geljo heads the medalist charts after an opening round 4-under 68.
Tournament action continues Monday teams switching courses for their second round of play. Following day two the Top 20 teams will compete for the tournament crown with the remaining squad competing in a consolation event.
