TUSLA, Okla. – University of North Florida men's tennis' Yannick Zuern won a pair of three-set matches on Sunday and will play for a chance to advance to the Qualifying Singles Draw on Monday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Â
"I'm really proud of Yannick's mental toughness today," said assistant coach Malte Stropp, who is at the tournament. "He did not play his best tennis, but he found a way to win and that's what two good tennis players do. To win 7-6 in the third set in two consecutive matches is huge."
Â
To start the day, Zuern battled back to edge out Buffalos's Amar Hromic 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the Round of 128. He followed that up with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3) Round of 64 triumph over Middle Tennessee's Gian Issa, who was ranked No. 9-16 in the Pre-Qualifying round.
Â
Zuern faces Julian Childers from Illinois on Monday at 9 a.m. EST/8 a.m. CST, with a chance to advance to the Qualifying Singles round on the line.
Â
Meanwhile, Jack Findel-Hawkins starts competition on Monday in Qualifying Singles. Findel-Hawkins, who is seeded No. 3 in the Qualifying Singles round, faces Ohio State's Hugo di Feo at 10:30 a.m. EST/9:30 a.m. CST at the Case Tennis Center.
