JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Katy Mixon and freshman Krista Colubiale scored a goal each as the North Florida women's soccer team defeated Stetson 2-1 on senior night Friday at Hodges Stadium.
The Ospreys (3-8-0, 1-1-0 A-Sun) notched their first A-Sun win this season while the Hatters drop to 6-5-0, 1-1-0 in conference play.
"We are happy to get our first conference win, we knew Stetson was going to be a great opponent, they had a great result last week and they're very dangerous," said coach Robin Confer. I'm proud of the girls, we put away two great goals and created some chances."
The Ospreys struck first in the 25th minute, when senior Lanie Keating fired a free kick from just outside the left corner of the box, the ball was deflected off of the defense, landing at the feet of Mixon, who put it in from just inside the six-yard box for the 1-0 lead.
North Florida only took 11 seconds to strike again, as Lanie Keating earned her second assist of the match, finding freshman Colubiale on the right side with a long lead pass. Colubiale took the pass and caught the keeper out of position, shooting across and finding the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead and her second goal of the season.
Stetson almost broke the shutout in the 39th minute but junior goalkeeper Susie Ford snagged the shot with a diving save, helping the Ospreys take their 2-0 lead into the half.
The Hatters eventually found the net in the 60th minute, when Sarah Collins made a one-on-one move into the left side of the box and fired a shot, finding the right side of the net.
The Ospreys defense held strong through the rest of the second half. Goalkeepers Ford and Victoria Ekeli combined for six saves, facing 11 shots.
"We are going to take it one game at a time. We have a tough opponent next Friday, but we will try to build on this momentum and it was a great win on Senior Night for our seniors," added Confer.
