JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- North Florida runners swept the first seven scoring finishes as the Ospreys earned their second straight team title at the 110% UNF Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning at the Hayt Golf Center.
UNF finished with a team score of 15 to outdistance runner-up finisher Stetson (70 points).
Sophomore Michael Damato, making his season debut, led the Osprey's strong performance clocking a time of 15:45.24 over the 5K course. Damato was followed closely by freshmen teammates Tyler Bennett (15:46.02) and Nick Morken (15:46.30) with sophomore Brad Hort (15:57.61), juniors Jeremy Bryan (15:59.27) and Justin Bryan (16:00.86) and sophomore Jacob Fuller (16:12.85) rounding out the scoring finishers for UNF.
"The team ran well today," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We were excited to have a strong pack run up front. It was really nice to see our freshmen and some of our other newcomers continue to run well. It was good to have Mike Damato back after missing last week's race due to not feeling well. We feel good about where our team is right now. They are working hard and they want to be good and it is nice to see the work they put in over the summer starting to pay off for them. It was a great morning filled with a lot of excitement on a really good cross country course."
Former UNF runner and defending event champion Chris Haynes, who raced unattached, was the top finisher crossing the finish line in 15:42.32.
Webber International finished third in the collegiate team standings with a score of 80 followed by Jacksonville (87) and Edward Waters (127). In the boy's prep race, Creekside High claimed the team title with a score of 27 points.
North Florida will enjoy a two-week break before returning to competition at the Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on Sept. 20.
