BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With a trio of players listed among the Top 10 individuals, the North Florida men's golf team finished Monday's opening day of play at the prestigious Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by Graeme McDowell in second place at 4-under 572.
The Ospreys fired rounds of even-par 288 in the morning session followed by the afternoon's top performance of 284 (-4). Senior Joey Petronio was the squad's top performer shooting rounds of 71-68=139 (-5) to end the day tied for second.
Joining Petronio among the Top 10 individuals were teammates junior Taylor Hancock tied for fifth at 3-under 141 (70-71) and senior MJ Maguire tied for 10th at 1-under 143 (72-71).
"We had some good play this afternoon," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "A few late mistakes left us a few more shots back but part of that came from being tired on a long day. We just need to get some rest and by ready to play another solid round tomorrow. It will be a fun opportunity to play in the final group alongside Alabama and the tournament host, UAB."
Rounding out the Ospreys lineup for the Shoal Creek Invitational were junior Austin Padova tied for 33rd at 150 (75-75) and redshirt freshman Dillon Woods tied for 43rd at 152 (78-74). True freshman Jordan Batchelor is tied for 22nd at 147 (72-75) competing as an individual. Monday's rounds marked the collegiate debuts for both Woods and Batchelor.
Two-time defending national champion Alabama leads the 12-team field at 10-under 586 following rounds of 281-285. UNF is six shots behind in second with event host UAB in third at 574. Ole Miss and Memphis are tied for fourth at 578 followed by UCF (582), Georgia Southern (585), Southeastern Louisiana (586), Liberty (601), Samford (613), Georgetown (613) and Mississippi State (619).
Bama's Tom Lovelady leads the individual medalist competition at 136, three shots ahead of Petronio and Memphis' Cory Gaylord.
