Mobile, Ala. – A goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference in a tightly contested, non-conference match between The North Florida Ospreys and The Jaguars of South Alabama at the Jaguar Classic in Mobile, Ala.
Â
"South Alabama is a very good team and why they won their conference last year. Megan Dorsey had an outstanding game in goal and came up with some big saves to keep us in the game," said head coach Robin Confer. "I thought we could have done a better job of possessing the ball at times and we have to be better with our final pass."
Â
In the sixth game this season for the Ospreys (1-7-0) decided by one goal, The Jaguars' (7-2-0) Steffi Hardi scored the game winner in the 65th minute, when she found the back of the net off of a well-placed corner by teammate Tiina Trutsi.
Â
The Jaguars held the shot advantage by a count of 20-7, with the on-goal advantage at 11-5, South Alabama also earned nine corner kicks compared to UNF's four.
Â
For the Ospreys, seven different players were able to get shots off but unfortunately none went into the net. In the 82nd minute, freshman Kayla Gray was played in by senior Jill Holdsworth from the Osprey half, placing Gray in a breakaway opportunity. The Jaguar keeper, Sarah Hay, came up big, however, and pushed the attempted finesse shot wide.
Â
Soon after, in the 83rd minute, Gray split the defense when she played it in to sophomore Kayla Aritt, giving Aritt a one-on-one chance. Hay managed to make another big save, rushing off her line quickly to deflect the shot wide.
Â
Senior keeper Megan Dorsey play a brilliant match, tallying 10 saves in the losing effort, including three consecutive saves to end the first half.
Â
"It's tough having so many close games not go our way but I am proud of the fight in this team," added Confer. "As a young team we are learning and gaining valuable experience that will help us down the road."
Â
North Florida is back in action in Mobile on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, when they square off against the Trojans of Troy in a neutral-site, non-conference matchup.
