ATLANTA, Ga. - Following a lightning delay that lasted over two hours, the North Florida women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Panthers of Georgia State Friday night in Atlanta at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Â
"This game was evenly matched and hard fought between both teams and the bottom line is the team that finishes their chances is the team that will win games," said head coach Robin Confer. "I'm tired of saying we need to finish our chances because it is costing us games where we play well enough to win."
Â
An early second half goal by the Panthers (1-4-2) was the difference maker in the hard-fought match. In the 50th minute, Whitney Ravan received a cross into the box from Laurie Harriman, and Ravan found the bottom left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Â
The Ospreys (1-6-0) displayed a strong attacking mindset and started fast in the first half, creating multiple corner kick chances, despite the waterlogged pitch.
Â
North Florida managed to tally 11 shots in the loss and created six chances off of corner kicks. Senior keeper Megan Dorsey led the defensive effort with five saves, while led the team in shots with three, one being on goal.
Â
The Ospreys had multiple chances towards the end of the match to equalize, but just couldn't find the back of the net. In the 44th minute, freshman Mikki Olson drew two defenders at the corner of the 18 box, finding freshman Kayla Gray wide open 12 yards out, but Gray pushed the ball right of the net and the charging Panther keeper, Brie Haynes.
Â
In the 66th minute, senior Jill Holdsworth managed to get a hold of the ball and rip it towards the top of the net, but the keeper Haynes managed to knock the ball away over the crossbar.
Â
In the 85th minute, sophomore Alexis Bredeau managed to find junior Lanie Keating at the top of the box, who drilled the ball to back of the six yard box, but Haynes smothered the ball which had landed off of the block at the feet of Gray.
Â
"I am proud of how hard we fought and battled until the end," added Confer. "We have another tough test on Sunday and need to be ready for Georgia Southern."
Â
Five of the Ospreys seven matches this season have been decided by one goal. They look to rebound on Sunday in Statesboro, Ga., against the Eagles of Georgia Southern.
