BUIES CREEK, N.C. – University of North Florida volleyball travels back to North Carolina for the two-day Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational hosted by Campbell and held at Gore Arena. The Ospreys face Elon on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and then play Campbell (12:30 p.m.) and South Carolina (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
Â
"We have had a good week of practice," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "The team continues to be enthusiastic about getting better and this weekend is another great opportunity to do that. This tournament will have some very good competition and we are looking forward to the trip."
Â
The Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational is the third of four-straight early season tournaments for the Ospreys. It is also the second tournament for the Ospreys to take place in North Carolina after UNF began the season in Durham at the Duke Invitational.
Â
UNF comes off a 2-2 showing at last weekend's Jax Marriott Volleyball Classic held at UNF Arena. Both of the Ospreys wins came in 3-0 sweeps.
Â
Junior Tessa Alyman was selected to the Jax Marriott Volleyball Classic after tallying 39 kills and averaging 3.00 kills per set. An outside hitter, Alyman hit .243.
Â
UNF has served 10 aces in each of its last two matches. Both times, multiple Ospreys served three aces. Against Coastal Carolina, Courtney Miller, Carinne Turner and Cari Whitmire each had three aces. Meanwhile, Alyman and Abby Fesl served up three against Bethune-Cookman.
Â
Elon returns to the road after a mid-week match at home against High Point on Wednesday. The Phoenix held off High Point 3-2. However, Elon has gone 1-2 in each of its previous two early season tournaments. Sydney Busa leads the team with 2.25 kills per set.
Â
UNF leads the all-time series 1-0 and defeated Elon 3-0 on Oct. 2, 1994 at the Rollins Invitational.
Â
Saturday will be the first time UNF faces Campbell since the Camels made the move to the Big South. After starting the season 3-0, Campbell has dropped its last five matches, including its last two in five sets. Alexis Hein averages 2.34 kills per set, while Mary Crema has a 4.59 dig-per-set average.
Â
The Ospreys tied the all-time series at 4-4 with the last meeting with Campbell. The Ospreys posted a 3-1 victory on Nov. 6, 2010 in an Atlantic Sun Conference match.
Â
This is the second-straight weekend in which South Carolina plays in a tournament hosted by a Big South team. All of the Gamecock's matches have been in a tournament format. South Carolina opened the year with a 3-0 showing in its own tournament, but went 1-2 at last weekend's Winthrop Invitational. Taylr McNeil averages 3.35 kills per set and Mikael Christiaansen is averaging 4.00 digs per set.
