DeLAND, Fla. -- Bolstered by four runners finishing in the Top 10, the North Florida men's cross country team opened the 2014 season with a meet championship at the Hatter Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Ospreys finished with a meet best score of 36 highlighted by true freshman Nick Morken's fourth place showing in a time of 26:50.90 on the 8K course at River City Nature Park.
"This was a very good opening performance for the men's team," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "Our plan for the race worked well and I was really pleased with the performance of our entire team. I was proud of our incoming runners and felt like they really gave our team a boost. Overall it was a great morning for us."
Joining Morken among the top 10 finishers on Saturday, junior Justin Bryan claimed a sixth-place showing in 27:02.28 while freshman Tyler Bennett was 7th (27:14.96) and sophomore Brad Hort was 8th (27:23.26). Sophomore Jacob Fuller clocked a time of 27:32.79 in finishing 11th followed by freshman Tyler Stahl in 18th (27:55.56) and sophomore Scott Simpson in 24th (29:40.81)
UNF edged preseason Atlantic Sun favorite Lipscomb for the team crown with the Bisons tallying a score of 43. Florida Gulf Coast was third with a score of 44 followed by Stetson (122) and Bethune-Cookman (126).
North Florida next races on Sept. 6 in their lone home event of the season, the 110% UNF Cross Country Invitational at the Hayt Golf Center on the UNF campus.
