JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Caio Gomes and Yannick Zuern captured the doubles title at the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic as University of North Florida men's tennis finish the fall season at two tournaments on Sunday.
Â
"Yannick and Caio did a great job of executing what we've been working on with our doubles teams all fall," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "To beat two Duke teams, one Oklahoma State team and one Michigan team throughout the weekend is an incredible achievement. I'm proud of them for finishing our fall season with a championship. The future is bright for the team."
Â
After Sunday's play was delayed due to weather that rolled through Bradenton overnight, Gomes and Zuern pulled out an 8-5 win against Duke's Raphael Hemmeler and Josh Levine. Gomes and Zuern were the No. 1 seed in the tournament and are ranked No. 52 nationally.
Â
Meanwhile, the Ospreys had a tough day on the courts at the Florida Invitational, falling in all five singles matches and both doubles matches.
Â
"Unfortunately, our day at the Florida Invitational was not how we wanted to finish our fall campaign," said assistant coach Malte Stropp. "I hope the guys use this as a learning experience."
Â
Sunday's competition was also delayed as a result of the overnight weather. UNF faced Florida in singles and Texas in doubles.Â
In singles, Jack Findel-Hawkins fell 6-2, 6-1 to No. 11 Maxx Lipman and Norbert Nemcsek suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback to No. 68 Elliott Orkin. Lasse Muscheites dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to Chase Perez-Blanco. Diego Hidalgo defeated Zach Goldeberg 6-4, 6-2, while Julian Bradley lost 6-1, 6-1 to Oliver Landert.
Â
In doubles, Muscheites and Goldberg dropped an 8-6 match to Lloyd Glasspool and Nick Naumann. Findel-Hawkins and Nemcsek fell 8-5 to Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff.
