Highland Heights, Ky. – The North Florida women's soccer team defeated the Norse of Northern Kentucky 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the NKU Soccer Stadium for their first A-Sun conference win of the season.
Â
"This team's fight and perseverance is amazing. I am so proud of the effort the team gave today," said head coach Robin Confer. "Sunday games on the road are tough and after playing to OT on Friday and to get four points on this weekend is tremendous."
Â
The Ospreys (3-9-1, 1-1-1 A-Sun) broke the 0-0 tie in the 41st minute, when freshman Jess Kinlaw fielded a senior Jill Holdsworth corner just outside the six-yard box. She settled the ball and ripped it low to the right side of the net past the Norse keeper for the 1-0 lead and her first career goal.
Â
The Norse (4-5-3, 0-1-2 A-Sun) found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Jessica Frey got a quick shot off of a Sami Rutowski free kick, finding the lower right corner of the net past senior keeper Megan Dorsey.
Â
"Northern Kentucky is a dangerous team in the attack with some personality players," added Confer. "They created some really good chances and Dorsey and our defense continued to stay strong throughout the game."
Â
In the 84th minute, freshman Kayla Gray got a one-on-one opportunity after a Holdsworth feed and beat the keeper that came out over the middle of the field for the eventual game-winner.
Â
"Kayla Gray and Jenna Steininger were great for us coming off the bench today and it was an entire team effort for the result," concluded Confer. "We can enjoy the result today but it's back to work on Tuesday to get ready for another tough weekend of conference play."
Â
The Norse led in the final shots tally, 19-11, and the shots-on-goal advantage 9-7. Dorsey led all keepers with eight saves, while sophomore Alexis Bredeau led the team in shots with three.
Â
The Ospreys are back home at Hodges Stadium next weekend in two Atlantic Sun matchups. They host USC Upstate on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m., before a Sunday match against Kennesaw State at 1:00 pm. Both matches will be streamed live on ASun.TV.
