TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- In a field filled with regionally ranked programs, the South Region No. 8 North Florida men's cross country team captured a fifth-place showing in the challenging Crimson Classic on Alabama's Harry Pritchett Course.
UNF concluded the race with 165 points, finishing ahead of South Region No. 6 ranked Alabama, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 13 Samford, No. 14 Mississippi State and South Central No. 6 Stephen F. Austin.
Sophomore Michael Damato notched his fourth consecutive top runner performance for the Ospreys finishing 11th in an 8k time of 25:28.77. The freshman duo of Tyler Bennett and Nick Morken joined him in the Top 25 after finishing 18th (25:38.33) and 21st (25:41.36), respectively.
"It was an outstanding performance by our very young men's program," said UNF head coach Jeff Pigg. "Michael Damato continues to run well. He is gaining experience and gets closer to the front in every race. He is becoming a very good leader day in and day out. Tyler and Nick had fantastic showings as freshmen. These guys are just getting started with what we expect to be great careers. Our top three really hit it today. Justin and Jeremy Bryan have been practicing great and that began to show through in this race."
Sophomore Brad Hort led a solid second wave of Osprey runners finishing with a time of 26:18.22 (55th) followed closely by juniors Justin Bryan (26:27.68) and Jeremy Bryan (26:28.46). Senior Jacob Fuller rounded out the UNF top seven finishing in a time of 26:44.00.
A trio of freshman wrapped up the group of competitors for the Ospreys as Tyler Stahl posted a time of 26:56.84, Wesley Norton finished in 27:31.01 and Bradley Langenberg clocked a time of 27:52.37.
Having concluded its regular season race schedule, North Florida now turns its attention to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Nov. 1 in Deland, Fla.
"This was a nice race to have leading into the conference meet in two weeks," added Pigg. "It leaves us confident and hungry for another race."
