HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Freshman outside hitter Courtney Miller tallied a 19-kill, 17-dig double-double in University of North Florida's 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) loss at Northern Kentucky on Friday night at Regents Hall.
"We continue to do a ton of really good things and are putting ourselves in a great spot," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "Unfortunately, we just haven't broken through yet. When we do, this team is going to be tough to beat."
Down by five midway through the first set, UNF attempted to cut into Northern Kentucky's lead and came to within two on a Norse attack error. However, Northern Kentucky pulled away and went up 1-0 in the match after a bad Osprey set.
The Osprey strung together points multiple times throughout the second set and gained a six-point 20-14 lead on an Abby Fesl service ace. Northern Kentucky used a three-point run to cut UNF's lead in half. The Ospreys answered with a Morgan Van Alstine-Cameron McGuire block that started three-point run of their own to go up 23-17. After a Norse kill, UNF scored the last two points with a Tessa Alyman kill and a Norse attack error to tie the match at 1-1.
With the third set tied at 14-14, UNF went on a critical 6-2 run to take a 20-16 lead. A kill from Ambre Desaulnay sparked the run, while a Miller-Van Alstine block gave the Ospreys the four-point lead. The closest Northern Kentucky could get was three points for the rest of the set as a kill from Alyman sealed the set victory and gave UNF a 2-1 match advantage.
The fourth set was a battle with 18 ties and five lead changes. UNF had a key two-point led at 19-17 on a bad set by the Norse. Northern Kentucky fought back and forced four late ties, including at 23-23 on a costly Megan Wanstrath kill that began a set-ending three-point run.
Down by three in the fifth set, UNF battled back to tie the set at 11-11 on a Northern Kentucky attack error. However, Northern Kentucky finished the match on a 4-1 run.
Miller's 19 kills were a match high, while Cari Whitmire also had 17 digs. Alyman and McGuire added 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Fesl put up 26 assists and Carinne Turner tallied 24 assists.
UNF hit .234 for the match and made 61 kills and 61 digs.
Jayden Julian led the Norse with 18 kills, while Keely Creamer, Jenna Ruble and Wanstrath each had 11 kills. Ruble also hit .391 for the match. Taylor Snyder made 48 digs, while Mel Stewart recorded 13 digs.
Northern Kentucky hit .211 and recorded 61 kills and 54 digs.
