
Ospreys Conclude Regular Season on Road

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of North Florida baseball team will play the final three regular season games of the year this weekend as the Ospreys take on USC Upstate in an Atlantic Sun Conference series at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
The series begins with games on Thursday and Friday night beginning at 6:00 p.m. The two teams conclude the regular season with a game on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 36-16 overall record; including a 16-8 mark in the A-Sun. USC Upstate is 25-26 overall and 8-16 in league play. The Ospreys are 12-7 on the road this season, while the Spartans are 18-12 at home.
The Ospreys leads the all-time series with the Spartans, 32-5. UNF holds a 13-2 advantage in Spartanburg, S.C. The two teams first met in 1989 with the Ospreys claiming a 4-0 victory in Jacksonville. North Florida won the first 22 games of the series.
Last time out, North Florida jumped out to an early lead over Georgia Southern and held on for a 5-2 victory on Tuesday night at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro, Ga.
North Florida opened the game with two runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 5-2 victory behind solid pitching. The Ospreys pitching staff allowed just two runs on nine hits in the game. UNF used four pitchers on the night, combining for six strikeouts, while walking just three.
On the mound, Tyler Moore picked up his second win of the season. The junior tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Moore walked two and struck out four batters. Jamie Cardwell entered the game in relief of Moore. The southpaw allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout in his 1.0 inning of work. Evan Incinelli threw 1.2 scoreless innings allowing four hits and a walk. Corbin Olmstead ended the game with 1.1 scoreless innings en route to his team-leading sixth save of the season. Olmstead allowed a pair of hits, while striking out one.
Offensively, the Ospreys tallied 12 hits in the game, including three extra base hits. Joe Wielbruda, Tyler Marincov, Nick Karmeris and Spencer Herrmann each notched a pair of base hits in the game. Five different batters scored a run in the game, while five batters drove in a RBI each. Marincov, Corey Bass and Donnie Dewees each doubled in the game to provide the power production for the Ospreys.
Six teams have already locked up spots in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship – Mercer, Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida, East Tennessee State, Kennesaw State and Stetson. The final two spots are up for grabs between Lipscomb (10-14), USC Upstate (8-16) and Jacksonville (8-16).
Five A-Sun batters are currently riding double-digit hit streaks led by Mercer's Chesny Young (22) and followed by North Florida's Tyler Marincov (20) and USC Upstate's Brody Greer (20). Stetson's Patrick Mazeika and Kennesaw State's Bo Way also produced hitting streaks of 21 and 20 games, respectively, this season. Stetson's James Rasmussen (13) and Lipscomb's Lee Wilson (10) are also amidst a hitting streak.
Over the past 15 seasons, an A-Sun team from the state of Florida has won the conference regular-season title 13 times (Troy - 2005; Belmont - 2012). Mercer (17-7) sits in first heading into the final weekend in front of three Florida teams; North Florida (16-8), FGCU (16-8) and Stetson (15-9).
North Florida's 36 victories are 22nd-most in the A-Sun Conference since 2003. The 36 wins for the Ospreys are the most for UNF as a member of the Atlantic Sun.
In the latest WarrenNolan.com RPI release, Mercer claimed the 24th spot just ahead of North Florida (52nd) and FGCU (66th). ETSU sits just outside of the top-100 at 104th. The past 10 Atlantic Sun teams to receive at-large berths into NCAA Tournament had an average RPI of 35.
Stetson and Mercer have been the two hottest teams in the A-Sun over the past five conference series. The Bears are 12-3 in those five series, while the Hatters are 11-4. FGCU and North Florida is right behind the duo with 10-5 records.
Two A-Sun starting pitchers have ERA's lower than 2.00; KSU's Steve Janas (0.81) and UNF's Michael Renner (1.71). The last pitcher with a sub-two ERA was FAU's Mickey Storey in 2005 at 1.70. Three pitchers are just over the mark; Mercer's Brandon Barker (2.03), ETSU's Kerry Doane (2.15) and FGCU's Ricky Knapp (2.18).
For the second-straight season, Stetson hosts the Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship. The Hatters have served as the championship site for the 10 of the last 12 title games. This season, two more teams will be invited to the tournament as eight teams will trek to DeLand, Fla. for the conference championship.

Two outs from recording the biggest upset in program history Tuesday evening, the USC Upstate baseball team saw No. 14 Clemson University belt a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the Tigers to an 8-7 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Spartans suffer their second heartbreaker of the year to a top 15 team in the country after falling 11-10 to No. 8 Kentucky earlier this season. The Tigers win their eighth straight game with the walk-off thriller.
