Ospreys Open in 6th at ASun Women's Golf Championship

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The North Florida women's golf team is in sixth place after firing an opening round 300 Monday in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship being held at Pine Lakes Golf Club.
The Ospreys,making their debut at the conference championship event, matched the second lowest score of the season with their day one performance. UNF is just two shots out of third-place in the team standings.
Freshman Mary Rodgers held the individual lead for a portion of the day and finished tied for 6th at even par 72 to pace the North Florida squad thru 18 holes of play.
Joining Rodgers in the Top 20 listing were freshmen teammates Kelly Aylwin in a tie for 13th (75) and Emelie Alpe tied for 18th (76). Tess Huber and Belinda George, another pair of Osprey rookies, rounded out the lineup in a tie for 23rd with rounds of 77.
ETSU leads the team competition following an opening round of one-under-par 287 while Jacksonville is second at 293. Florida Gulf Coast and Mercer are tied for third at 298 followed by Kennesaw (299), UNF, Stetson (305), USC Upstate (311), Lipscomb (318) and Northern Kentucky (336).
ETSU's Sian Evans and JU's Jessica Welch both carded rounds of 5-under 67 to share the medalist lead. Only seven players completed the opening round with scores of par or better.
Tournament action continues Tuesday with another round of 18 holes on the par 72, 6,198-yard layout at Pine Lakes. North Florida will be paired with FGCU and Kennesaw State in round two beginning at 9:30 a.m. off the first tee.
