JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team will bring its 2013 regular season to a close this weekend, when it travels north for a pair of road matches against Atlantic Sun Conference opponents Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Last weekend, the Ospreys earned their 10th win in 11 matches with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast. The win pushed UNF's record to 12-7 on the year, including a perfect 6-0 in A-Sun conference matches.
Northern Kentucky, who the Ospreys will face at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, is yet to find its first win in Atlantic Sun play after joining the conference this season. The Norse are 3-15 overall, with an 0-7 record in conference play.
NKU's last win, nine matches ago, was a 6-1 triumph over Chicago State. Guillaume Berman has led the way for the Norse, racking up eight wins for NKU, all at the No. 1 position.
Lipscomb, UNF's opponent at 2 p.m. on Saturday, enters the weekend with a 7-10 overall record, including a 3-4 mark in the A-Sun. The Bisons have also battled to a 5-1 record on their home courts.
For the Ospreys, senior Julien Belair will look to continue his torrid run of singles play, as he carries an 11-match winning streak into the weekend. The run has put Belair into the record books as the longest singles winning streak in UNF's Division I history. Sophomore Norbert Nemcsek has also racked up double-digit wins in dual matches for the Ospreys, compiling an 11-7 record playing at the No. 3 and 4 positions. Neither Ospreys has lost a conference match yet.
Moving into the regular season's final weekend, UNF sits atop the A-Sun standings with its 6-0 record, one game ahead of No. 74 East Tennessee State, who the Ospreys defeated 4-3 in Johnson City. With their next win, UNF will clinch the A-Sun regular season championship, along with the No. 1 seed in next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament. The top two seeds in the six-team tournament receive a bye to the semifinal round.
