JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team rolled to its second consecutive shutout on Saturday afternoon, as the Ospreys blanked Mercer, 7-0, at UNF Tennis Complex.
After a somewhat sluggish start to the day, the Ospreys rallied to sweep the doubles matches for the third consecutive match. Seniors
Lorena Aviles and
Melanie Aguirre won their fifth-consecutive match at No. 1 in fine form, cruising to an 8-3 victory over Lucie Payrat and Isabel Dennis. Junior
Simona Weymar and sophomore
Rebeca Pereira then earned a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 2 to clinch the point. The duo has now won all six of the matches they have been paired together for.
Sophomores
Taylor Hollander and
Marina Cunningham's third-straight doubles win took a bit more time, as the duo fought their way to a marathon 14-12 win in the tiebreak to secure a 9-8 win at No. 3 and earn the sweep for the Ospreys.
"We started a little tight in the doubles matches, but we were able to pull out all three matches," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "I'm happy with how we found a way to win those matches even though we weren't playing our best tennis. It shows that our pairs were working together until the end."
UNF has now won 13 of its last 14 doubles matches.
The Ospreys had an easier time in singles play, as every UNF competitor earned a win in straight sets. Aguirre started things off for UNF, taking down Roxy Bartz at No. 5 to put the Ospreys up 2-0. She was followed almost immediately by Cunningham, who rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kealee Heffner at No. 4.
Hollander earned the clinching point for UNF at No. 3. After shutting out her opponent in the first set, the sophomore battled to a win in the second to earn a 6-0, 7-5 win and seal the match for the Ospreys.
With the match in hand, Aviles tacked on a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Weymar earned her seventh-straight victory at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Freshman
Mariella Calderon then wrapped up the sweep for UNF with a 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6. The win marked Calderon's second consecutive win and the second dual match victory of her college career.
"I was very happy that we played much better in singles and we got the job done," Cohen said. "Next week's trip to East Tennessee State will make for an exciting match."
With the victory, the Ospreys are now 9-3 on the season, including a 2-0 mark in A-Sun play. UNF also extended its winning streak to five matches and is now 8-2 on its home courts. Mercer falls to 4-8 on the year with the loss.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Friday, March 22, when they head north for their first conference road trip. UNF will take on ETSU, who they defeated in the finals of last year's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, in a 2 p.m. match.
